Rainforest Canyons

I hate hot and dry weather. It's boring and uncomfortable. But, as with all things, there's a silver lining. Water levels are low enough to safely hike and wade all the way up this stunning canyon! I've been wanting to get down here for some time now, so it was awesome to finally make it happen. It's crazy to see the difference in water levels... at peak flow, this waterfall absolutely thunders into the canyon and you can hear/feel it long before you see it. Yesterday, it was a trickle in comparison, like someone had just barely left the tap on.
Solitude of the Forest
Although brief, this was a much needed getaway into the forest. Barely anyone else was around and I just sat, watched and listened while occasionally pressing the shutter button. The only sounds were that of the water flowing and ravens talking to each other up in the trees. Places like this are where I'm happiest.
Mossy Paradise
We timed our visit so that the afternoon light would be peeking into this little canyon and it didn't disappoint! My goal with this was to capture the beautiful moss and rocks. The fact that there's a waterfall is simply icing on the cake for me! As usual, no polarizer was used, as I have a bit of an affinity for reflections on rocks and foliage. Most of the editing for this image was done by dodging with luminosity masks. I tried my best to create a nice, contrasty foreground with a warm, hazy background with the creek bringing it all together.
Canyon Contours
I'm just gonna get it out there - I suck at intimate landscape images. They're incredibly hard to pull off, as it requires a completely different way of visualizing the world around you. I wanted to challenge myself and try to capture an intimate view of this canyon and its incredible rocks. I love how shiny and smooth they look. I'm still a bit iffy about the overall composition, as I wanted it to have a wider field of view... but some pesky tree branches were hanging in the way!
